Honoring the Heights: My Journey Leading the Historic Re-measurement of Mount Everest
- 2025-03-14
The Himalayas have been my home, my classroom, and my greatest inspiration for over 25 years. As someone who has dedicated his life to mountaineering and promoting sustainable adventure tourism in Nepal, I have always believed that the mountains have stories to tell-and it's our duty to listen, protect, and share them with the world.
One of the most significant chapters in my own story unfolded when I had the honor of leading the historic re-measurement of Mount Everest-an expedition that blended scientific pursuit with the spirit of exploration and paid tribute to the enduring legacy of the Sherpa people.
Why Re-measure Mount Everest?
Mount Everest is more than a mountain. It’s a global icon of endurance, exploration, and human ambition. But even the world's highest peak isn’t immune to change. Seismic activity, tectonic shifts, and technological advancements have raised ongoing questions about Everest’s true height.
With the previous internationally recognized height standing at 8,848 meters, it became crucial to reassess Everest using modern tools. In 2019, the Government of Nepal initiated the first-ever official measurement led entirely by Nepal, a project that would mark a milestone in the country’s scientific and mountaineering history.
I had the privilege to serve as the leading mountain guide for the national survey team, which included the Survey Officer, Surveyor, and Assistant Survey Officer. Together, we embarked on a mission that would redefine the mountain’s height-and showcase Nepal’s ability to lead from the front.
A Climb Fueled by Purpose
This was no ordinary climb. The re-measurement expedition demanded precision, planning, and passion. Alongside a dedicated team of mountaineers and scientists, I led the mission into the death zone, facing brutal weather and technical challenges at extreme altitudes. But we were not there just to summit-we were there with a deeper purpose.
At the summit, we conducted a NSS (Nepalese Survey System) survey over a period of 1 hour and 16 minutes, gathering vital data to determine Everest's true height. Simultaneously, we used Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and GPS instruments to measure the snow depth at the top of the world-providing both the rock and snow height for scientific accuracy.
The final result: Mount Everest now officially stands at 8,848.86 meters, a revision that reflects the most accurate and up-to-date measurement to date.
A Milestone for Sherpas and Nepal
This successful expedition was not just mine-it was a victory for Nepal and every Sherpa whose footsteps have shaped Himalayan history. Too often, our contributions go unrecognized. But through this mission, we showed the world once again that Sherpas are not only guides-we are leaders, visionaries, and guardians of the mountains.
It also marked a proud moment for Nepal-showcasing our nation's capacity to lead major scientific and mountaineering projects independently. The re-measurement of Mount Everest by the Nepalese team was a historic achievement that belongs to every citizen of this beautiful mountain nation.
The Legacy Continues
The data we collected is now being used by scientists and geologists to study Everest's growth and the dynamics of the Himalayan region. But beyond the numbers, what we left behind is a legacy of unity, resilience, and deep respect for nature.
As the founder of Everest Sherpa Expedition, I remain committed to promoting ethical climbing, empowering local communities, and creating unforgettable experiences for every adventurer who dreams of the Himalayas. Whether it’s Everest, Ama Dablam, or a lesser-known gem-my mission is to guide you not just to the summit, but into the heart of the mountains.
