Overview of Manaslu Circuit Trek:

High above the hills of Gorkha, the white peaks of Manaslu - the 8th highest mountain in the world (8,163m), hang like walls of ice in the sky while the Budhi Gandaki flows 7,000m below. The Manaslu Circuit Trek is a journey to the foot of this majestic peak, a challenging yet rewarding adventure that unveils a world of snow-capped giants, vibrant cultures, and diverse landscapes. Unlike the bustling trails of Everest Base Camp or the Annapurna Circuit, the Manaslu trek offers a more secluded and authentic experience, allowing you to connect with nature and local cultures on a deeper level.

Our journey begins from a small village near historic Gorkha, winding through lush valleys and alongside rushing rivers, following the Budhi Gandaki. We trek through picturesque villages like Jagat, where traditional stone houses cling to the hillsides, and Dyang, where the aroma of juniper incense drifts from ancient monasteries. As we ascend, the landscape transforms, revealing breathtaking panoramas of snow-capped peaks, including Manaslu, Himalchuli, and Annapurna II.

This trek is enormously diverse, not only culturally, but also in terms of nature and landscape as the landscape changes from subtropical to arctic within two weeks. We start in the subtropical, green middle hills of Gorkha and slowly ascend higher into Tibetan territory. In the deciduous forests that cover the foothills of the Himalayas, hundreds of unusual bird species live in the most striking colours. The higher we get, the greater the chance of seeing wild mammals; beautiful grey langur (monkeys) and mint yaks in the jungle, large bluebirds and stately Himalayan tahr in the subalpine zone. Upper Manaslu is a protected National Park, and moreover, a restricted area, hence much less touristy and more authentic than, for example, the Annapurnas or the Everest area and is one of the few remaining habitats of the magnificent snow leopard.

We'll reach Samagaon, a village of stone houses with brightly painted window frames, where the rhythmic clang of blacksmiths' hammers mingles with the chanting of monks from the nearby monastery, all set against the backdrop of the majestic Manaslu massif. Here, we'll have the opportunity to acclimatize and immerse ourselves in the unique Sherpa culture of the region.

The trek culminates at the challenging but rewarding Larkya La Pass (5,135m), one of the most beautiful passes in the Himalayas with views of the Mansiri range (Manaslu, Himalchuli & Ngadi Chuli), Annapurna range, Peri Himal, Ganesh Himal among others. The sense of accomplishment after crossing this high pass is truly unforgettable.

Manaslu Circuit Trek is a demanding adventure; we begin early every day and walk for almost 5-7 hours on average for a total of 170 km but the higher stages are shorter, except for the crossing of the Larkya La. Nevertheless, we’ve designed the daily stages in such a way that anyone with a normal basic condition, a healthy body and good preparation can complete this trip; even with the thin air above 3,500m.

What truly sets the Manaslu Circuit Trek apart is its rich cultural tapestry. In the lower regions, we'll experience the warm hospitality of Nepali villagers, sharing stories over cups of “chiya”. As we climb higher, the Tibetan Buddhist influence becomes more pronounced, with prayer flags fluttering in the wind, mani stones inscribed with ancient mantras lining the trails, and chortens dotting the landscape. This trek offers a rare opportunity to witness the fascinating blend of Hinduism and Buddhism that characterizes the region, offering a deeply enriching cultural experience.

This challenging trek is best undertaken during the pre-monsoon (March-May) or post-monsoon (September-November) seasons. While physically demanding, the Manaslu Circuit Trek rewards trekkers with not only spectacular mountain views but also a profound sense of tranquility and solitude. The experience of walking through remote valleys, crossing swaying suspension bridges, interacting with the friendly locals, and witnessing their unique way of life makes the Manaslu Circuit Trek a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. The road initially follows the Trishuli River, offering glimpses of terraced fields, traditional villages, and lush green hills. After Machha Khola, you'll take a 4x4 jeep for the final leg to Jagat.

This day is all about experiencing the diversity of Nepal's landscapes, from the bustling Kathmandu Valley to the remote river gorges.

Day 03 Trek from Jagat to Dyang (1,800 m)

The trek from Jagat to Dyang begins with a roughly two-hour hike along the Budhi Gandaki River to Philim. This section offers views of Shringi Himal, a 7,175-meter peak near the Tibetan border.

The valley narrows as the trail ascends from Philim. After a short descent and crossing the Budhi Gandaki via a narrow wooden bridge, the trail climbs steeply for about thirty minutes before leveling out, offering a high vantage point above the confluence of the Shar Khola and Budhi Gandaki rivers. Here, the valley opens up, revealing scenic views.

The trail, sometimes a stone-paved trench carved into the rock face, leads to a section crossed by a bridge of branches and bamboo. This marks the end of the most challenging part of the day’s trail, though a short, difficult climb and descent remain. The scenery improves, with bamboo and rhododendron trees lining the path. The trek continues through forests of deciduous trees, rhododendrons, pines, and bamboo, with opportunities to spot birds, butterflies, and possibly Langur monkeys. Dyang, the first Tibetan village along the way, features a chorten adorned with intricate inscriptions.

  • Accommodation: Local Lodge at Dyang
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • Trek Time: 7-8 hours
  • Distance: 22 km

Day 04Trek from Dyang to Namrung (2,660 m)

Your hike from Dyang to Namrung begins with a winding descent to the riverbed. The trail is fascinating as you will find the river has carved the steep, rocky walls. After crossing numerous suspension bridges, you'll climb steeply along the left bank to the town of Lana. From there, the trail gradually ascends to the village of Unbae.

After lunch, you'll descend back towards the river. In the middle of the forest, you'll behold a remarkable sight: the Budhi Gandaki appears to have carved a passage through a huge rock. A wooden bridge spans this gap, offering a worthwhile opportunity to gaze down at the wild, swirling water below. A short while later, you'll cross the river again. From here, a rather long and somewhat steep climb begins, leading you through bamboo and rhododendron forests to Namrung, a beautiful village with a Buddhist monastery. Along the trail, after passing Prok village, a beautiful viewpoint offers stunning views of the snow-capped peaks of the Siringi Himal.

  • Accommodation: Local Lodge at Namrung
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • Trek Time: 7-8 hours
  • Distance: 20 km

Day 05Trek from Namrung to Samagaun (3,585 m)

The hike from Namrung to Samagaon unveils a dramatic shift in landscape and culture. The trail ascends from Namrung through rhododendron and bamboo forests, opening up to expansive views of Siringi Himal and other peaks. After crossing the Hinan Khola, fed by the Lidanda glacier, the trail ascends revealing a wide valley; the gateway to an alpine meadow before Sho village's stone gate, offering stunning views of Naike Peak, Manaslu North, and Manaslu itself. The path continues uphill through houses and farmland to Lo, where Ganesh Himal graces the valley below.

The path continues, crossing streams and traversing rocky slopes, with Manaslu, Dwijen Himal, and Lana Peak dominating the skyline. Lho showcases more Tibetan culture, with prayer wheels and mani walls lining the trail. Its gompa provides insight into local Buddhist traditions.

A final climb leads to Samagaon, the largest village on the circuit. Nestled in a wide valley, Samagaon offers breathtaking panoramic views, with Manaslu as its crown jewel.

  • Accommodation: Local Lodge at Samagaun
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • Trek Time: 7-8 hours
  • Distance: 18 km

Day 06Acclimatization Day at Samagaun - Hike to Pungyen Gumba (5,039 m)

The acclimatization excursion to Pungyen Gumba is crucial for the success of your Manaslu Circuit Trek. It is an important Buddhist monastery above 5,000 m where breathtaking panoramas and a serene atmosphere awaits you.

The trail from Samgaon to Pungyen Gumba winds along the Lungu Khola, crossing suspension bridges and ascending through changing vegetation. As you climb, views of Manaslu and other towering peaks unfold, and you’ll encounter mani walls, prayer flags, and small stupas, reflecting the region's deep spiritual heritage.

  • Accommodation: Local Lodge at Samagaun
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • Trek Time: 6-7 hours
  • Distance: 13.5 km

Day 07Trek from Samagaun to Samdo (3,860 m). Optional detour to Birendra Tal (3,450 m)

The hike from Samagaon to Samdo begins with a gentle walk along the Budhi Gandaki River in a northwesterly direction. The trail diverges before Kermo Kharka, taking a higher path towards Manaslu Base Camp. This detour involves a steep 3.5km climb over 45 minutes to the Manaslu glacier's moraine, followed by a gentler ascent to a cairn marking the base camp, which offers a view of Birendra Tal.

After soaking in the views, you'll backtrack to the main trail and continue following the Budhi Gandaki. You'll pass the impressive Mani walls at Kermo Kharka and you will soon spot the entrance to the Samdo Chorten high on a bluff. It is a challenging, steep climb to reach the chorten. From there, you'll descend back to the Budhi Gandaki, cross a small bridge, and then make a short final climb to the "Kane" entrance of Samdo.

Samdo, the highest village in the Nupri valley, was founded in the 1950s by Tibetan refugees. After lunch, you can choose to ascend another 200m on the Rui La trail for even better views or simply relax for the rest of the day.

  • Accommodation: Local Lodge at Samdo
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • Trek Time: 5-6 hours
  • Distance: 10 km

Day 08Acclimatization Day at Samdo - Hike to Rui La, a.k.a. Lajing Bhanjyang (4,998 m)

Unlike other Manaslu Circuit Trek itineraries which only include one acclimatization routine, our program includes an additional acclimatization excursion to Rui La (pass). This prepares your body for the long and grueling Larkya La while offering one of the best views on the Manaslu Circuit Trek.

From Samdo, you'll follow the trail towards Dharamshala, traversing towards the visible bridge on the Athahra Saya Khola (a wooden bridge, with a newer one under construction). A steep, 40-minute climb will bring you to a large boulder where the trail branches. The path straight ahead continues to Dharamshala; instead, you'll be taking the path climbing to the right. This trail traverses parallel to the right bank of the Athahra Saya Khola, high above the valley floor.

As you gradually gain altitude, you'll cross several small streams before descending to a larger side tributary. After crossing this tributary on a wooden bridge and ascending further on the west side of the Athahra Saya Khola, you'll reach a plateau where the river begins to turn west. Here, a side valley branching east leads to the Rui La Pass. After crossing a wooden bridge from the left side of the river, you ascend the arduous, zigzagging trail up the valley to arrive at Rui La pass which is marked by a Nepalese-Chinese border post. After taking in the views, you will retrace your steps back to Samdo.

  • Accommodation: Local Lodge at Samdo
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • Trek Time: 8-9 hours
  • Distance: 22 km

Day 09Trek from Samdo to Dharmasala a.k.a. Larkya La Phedi (4,460 m)

Today's hike follows yesterday's route to the Athahra Saya Khola from where you diverted to to Rui La. Following the straight path, you'll cross the river and then ascend through the remnants of Larkya Bazaar, a once-thriving trade market.

The ascent to Dharamsala, approximately three hours away, is demanding, as you traverse the moraine walls left by the Larkya Glacier. However, the trek is also incredibly rewarding, as you'll be accompanied by awe-inspiring panoramic views.

  • Accommodation: Local Lodge at Dharmasala
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • Trek Time: 2-3 hours
  • Distance: 6.5 km

Day 10Trek from Dharmasala to Bhimthang (3,790 m) via Larkya La (5,106 m)

Today marks the highlight of your trek-quite literally, its highest point.

You'll begin your day before dawn, trekking by headlamp. Weather permitting, you'll witness an awe-inspiring sunrise as the first rays of light ignite the towering peaks, slowly illuminating the landscape in a magnificent display.

The ascent to Larkya La pass is gradual at first. You'll initially follow the moraine alongside the Larkya Glacier, then traverse the glacier itself for approximately three hours. The rugged terrain is dramatic; moraines, imposing massifs, glaciers, and snow-capped peaks contrasting sharply against the azure sky and the subtle glacial frost. The pass itself isn't a sharply defined point, but the vibrant prayer flags will signal your arrival at Larkya La (5,106 m), the highest point of the Manaslu Circuit trek. From here, it's all downhill.

The descent to Bimthang is initially quite steep, navigating the high moraine ridge of the Salpudanda Glacier. From the grassy moraine of Dangboche Kharka, the trail eases, leading you along the moraine's edge to a large meadow dotted with houses-the village of Bimthang.

  • Accommodation: Local Lodge at Bhimthang
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • Trek Time: 9-10 hours
  • Distance: 15-16 km

Day 11Trek from Bhimthang to Gho (2,560 m)

After a delicious breakfast in Bimthang, with stunning views of Manaslu, Lamjung Himal, Himlung Himal, and Cheo Himal, you'll begin a gradual descent through the Burdin Khola valley. The trail crosses the high-altitude pasture of Sangure Kharka before a bridge crossing over the Dudh Khola.

You'll then trek through a rhododendron forest and a narrow valley until reaching Karche (2,785m), the highest cultivated land in the valley. After traversing the fields, a steep climb over a ridge awaits. Beyond the ridge, the trail sweeps in a large arc down to the riverbank at 2,580m, just a short distance from the village of Goa.

  • Accommodation: Local Lodge at Gho
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • Trek Time: 5-6 hours
  • Distance: 14.5 km

Day 12Trek from Gho to Dharapani (1,700 m) & drive to Besisahar (760 m)

This is the final day of trek on the Manaslu Circuit Trek.

You’ll continue on the relatively flat trail for about an hour until Tilche, where you'll begin a descent on stone-paved paths, eventually crossing a suspension bridge over the Dudh Khola. From there, it's a 1.5-hour ascent into the Annapurna Conservation Area to reach Dharapani.

After lunch, you will drive through terraced fields and winding roads to Besisahar, the hub of the Annapurna Circuit Trek.

  • Accommodation: Hotel at Besisahar
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
  • Trek Distance: 10 km
  • Trek Time: 3-4 hrs
  • Driving Distance: 45 km
  • Driving Time: 5-6 hrs

Day 13Drive from Besisahar to Kathmandu

After breakfast, you’ll begin your journey back to Kathmandu by vehicle. Upon reaching Kathmandu, you will be transferred to your hotel, where you can unwind and relax after your remarkable trek.

The day usually begins between 6.30 am and 7.30 am, with breakfast. During breakfast, the crew members make up the loads for the porters. You often start hiking by 7:30 am, though we wait for the sun to warm the air at higher altitudes.

There is plenty of time to relax or explore the surrounding area until the evening meal is served at about 6.30 pm. After dinner, there is time to chat, read or enjoy a game of cards with our crew. Most members are asleep by 9 pm.

We offer a highly skilled and experienced team of trekking guides, porters, support staff, cooks, and kitchen staff if required. Our team is dedicated to ensuring your safety and comfort throughout your trek. We provide high-quality camping gear, nutritious meals, and clean drinking water to keep you energized and hydrated on your trek. Our guides are knowledgeable about the local culture, flora, and fauna and will provide you with insights into the region's history and traditions. Our porters will carry your luggage, leaving you free to focus on enjoying the stunning scenery and challenging trails. We are committed to making your trekking experience memorable and enjoyable.

The Manaslu Circuit Trek offers a distinct and less-traveled trekking experience compared to more popular routes like Annapurna or Everest Base Camp.  A primary reason to choose Manaslu is the opportunity to trek on trails that are significantly less crowded. This allows for a more peaceful and immersive connection with the natural environment, often making you feel like you have the trails almost entirely to yourself. This solitude enhances the sense of tranquility and adventure, allowing for a deeper appreciation of the surroundings.

The scenery along the Manaslu Circuit is simply breathtaking.  You'll be treated to a panorama of majestic Himalayan peaks, including, of course, Manaslu itself, the eighth-highest mountain in the world. The diverse landscapes are a feast for the eyes, transitioning from lush subtropical forests in the lower elevations to the rugged, high-altitude terrain closer to the passes.  This constant change in scenery keeps the trek visually engaging and exciting.

Beyond the stunning vistas, the Manaslu region offers a rich and authentic cultural experience.  The trek passes through several remote Tibetan villages, providing a unique opportunity to witness the traditional lifestyle and spiritual heritage of the local communities.  You'll encounter ancient monasteries adorned with colorful prayer flags, intricately carved mani walls, and friendly villagers who are often happy to share their stories and customs.  This cultural immersion adds another layer of depth to the trekking experience.

The Manaslu Circuit is undoubtedly a challenging trek, involving significant elevation gain, high mountain passes, and varied terrain.  However, this challenge is part of what makes the trek so rewarding.  The sense of accomplishment you'll feel upon completing the circuit, combined with the awe-inspiring beauty that surrounds you every step of the way, makes the effort truly worthwhile.  It's a trek that pushes you physically and mentally but rewards you with unforgettable memories.

For those seeking an adventure that feels more remote, less commercialized, and offers a deeper connection with both nature and local culture, the Manaslu Circuit is an excellent choice.  It provides a chance to escape the crowds and experience the Himalayas in a more pristine and authentic way. And with our itinerary's inclusion of two dedicated acclimatization days, you'll be well-prepared for the altitude, maximizing your chances of a successful trek and minimizing the risks associated with altitude sickness.

Both the Manaslu and Annapurna Circuit Treks offer incredible Himalayan experiences, but they cater to slightly different preferences and priorities.

One of the most significant differences between the two treks lies in the number of trekkers on the trails.  Manaslu sees far fewer crowds than Annapurna, especially since the road construction on parts of the Annapurna Circuit has greatly increased accessibility. If you highly value solitude, a quieter experience in nature, and a more personal connection with your surroundings, Manaslu offers exceptional value in this regard.

Accessibility is another key point of comparison. While the Annapurna Circuit is now partially accessible by road, making some sections easier to reach, Manaslu still requires a longer and more adventurous drive to the starting point. This adds to the feeling of remoteness and adventure.

The teahouse infrastructure on the Annapurna Circuit is generally more developed, offering a wider range of amenities and often more comfortable accommodations.  Manaslu's teahouses are typically more basic, offering a more rustic experience.  This can be a positive aspect of the trek for some, adding to the authenticity, while others might prefer the greater comfort found on the Annapurna route.

The classic Annapurna Circuit trek is typically longer than the Manaslu Circuit. If you have less time available for trekking, Manaslu might be a better value proposition, as it packs a similarly rewarding experience into a shorter timeframe. This allows you to experience the beauty and challenge of the Himalayas without committing to as many days on the trail.

Finally, both treks offer stunning mountain scenery.  Some might argue that Annapurna's scenery is more diverse due to the wider range of landscapes you encounter. However, Manaslu's remoteness and the close-up, awe-inspiring views of Manaslu itself hold a unique allure that is hard to match.

Ultimately, the best value trek depends on your personal priorities.  If you crave solitude, a more challenging and remote adventure, and a trek where acclimatization is prioritized, Manaslu offers tremendous value. If you prefer more developed infrastructure, easier access to the trailhead, and potentially a longer trek with a wider range of landscapes, Annapurna Circuit Trek might be a better fit.

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is a strenuous trek, requiring good fitness and prior trekking experience. The trail includes steep ascents, rugged terrain, river crossings, and landslide-prone areas. The most challenging section is Larkya La Pass (5,165 m), where trekkers must walk on snow and ice in freezing temperatures with low oxygen levels.

Expect for the long day for the Larya La crossing, and the Rui La excursion, trekkers can expect to hike an average of 6-7 hours daily on the Manaslu Circuit Trek. However, the actual trekking time varies depending on the terrain, altitude gain, and the group's pace. Our itinerary includes 2 acclimatization routines to ensure your body gradually adjusts to the altitude.

For a detailed breakdown of each day's expected trekking hours, please see the itinerary section.

Generally, if you're in good overall health, free from pre-existing conditions exacerbated by high altitude (please consult your doctor), have experience in trekking in Nepal or are willing to train and prepare, the Manaslu Circuit trek is the perfect challenge.

Preparation is key: Start training at least 3-6 months before the trek.

  • Cardio Training like running, cycling, swimming, or stair climbing.
  • Strength Training: Squats, lunges, step-ups, and core workouts.
  • Hiking Practice: Long hikes with a weighted backpack.

Accommodation on the Manaslu Circuit Trek is basic; local lodges or tea houses with clean rooms, similar to what you find at 4,000 meters altitude on the Everest Base Camp Trek or the Annapurna Circuit Trek. While the later offer better options at lower elevation, accommodation on the Manaslu Circuit trek is same throughout.

  • Rooms: Simple twin-sharing with wooden beds, foam mattresses, pillows, and blankets.
  • Dining: Common area with a heating stove.
  • Toilets: Mostly shared, with some having squat toilets.
  • Charging & Wi-Fi: Available in some teahouses for an extra fee.

The lodges offer a variety of meals, including Nepali and some Western dishes. Dal Bhat (rice, lentils, and vegetables) is a staple. Again, unlike the Annapurna Circuit Trek or the Everest Base Camp Trek, you will find the menu options are limited but still fulfilling to fuel your adventure.

Our Manaslu Circuit Trek itinerary is 15 days, including arrival and departure days, two acclimatization days, and travel to and from the trailhead. The actual trekking time is typically around 12 days.

We can also create customized itineraries based on your preference, previous experience of trekking in the Himalayas, fitness level, and group size.

Acclimatization is crucial to prevent altitude sickness. Our itinerary includes two acclimatization routines to allow your body to adjust to the increasing altitude.

The traditional peak seasons are pre-monsoon (March-May) and post-monsoon (September-November) due to stable weather and clear views.

In Autumn (Sep-Dec), the skies are clear with good mountain views, while in Spring
(March-May), the trail is vibrant with rhododendrons.

However, recent years have brought warmer temperatures and pleasant conditions in mid-January, providing an extended trekking window. We can help you choose the ideal time based on your preferences and availability.

The Larkya La Pass (5,165 m) is the highest and toughest part of the Manaslu Circuit Trek. The ascent from Dharamsala (4,460 m) takes 8-9 hours and involves icy, steep, and rocky terrain. The descent to Bimthang is also challenging. Plus, strong winds and spontaneous mountain weather can exacerbate the challenge.

You will need the Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP), the Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (MRAP), and the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP), and TIMS permit. Our package includes all the necessary permits.
