Island Peak: A Timeless Gateway to Himalayan Climbing

Nestled in the heart of the Khumbu Himal, Island Peak-known locally as Imja Tse-is a stunning 6,189-meter giant rising from the glaciered amphitheater below Lhotse and Nuptse. Aptly named by the 1953 British Everest Expedition for its "island-like" appearance amidst a sea of ice, Island Peak has become the ideal stepping stone for aspiring climbers looking to venture into the world of Himalayan mountaineering.

Offered by Everest Sherpa Expedition, this iconic expedition seamlessly blends the cultural richness of the Everest region with the thrill of a technically engaging summit. Island Peak is the ultimate high-altitude challenge for trekkers seeking their first real taste of mountaineering, or climbers training for 7,000m and 8,000m giants.

A Journey Through the Heart of Everest

The expedition begins with a scenic mountain flight to Lukla, followed by a classic Everest Base Camp trail that takes you through the bustling Sherpa capital of Namche Bazaar, the spiritual hub of Tengboche, and the wide-open alpine valleys of Dingboche and Chhukung. This route offers exceptional acclimatization, helping you adjust gradually to the altitude and increasing your chance of a successful summit.

Before the climb, you’ll receive essential mountaineering training from our experienced guides in Chhukung or Base Camp-covering rope techniques, crampon use, glacier travel, and crevasse navigation.

The Climb: From Glacial Base to Glorious Summit

The ascent of Island Peak is a thrilling mix of trekking, rock scrambling, and glacier climbing. From Base Camp (5,087m), you’ll ascend to a pre-dawn start toward High Camp or make a direct summit push, depending on weather and conditions. A steep headwall near the summit involves the use of fixed ropes and a final traverse along a narrow ridge. A crevasse-crossing section-usually equipped with ladders-adds to the mountaineering excitement.

Once at the summit, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking 360° Himalayan panorama featuring Lhotse, Nuptse, Baruntse, Ama Dablam, Makalu, and even Mount Everest, cloaked in their icy glory.

Crucial Notes for Everest Region Treks & Expeditions in Peak Seasons:

Flight Diversions to Ramechhap (Manthali) Airport:

Ø  During peak trekking seasons-mid-September to November and March to May-flights from Kathmandu to Lukla are rerouted through Ramechhap Airport. This adjustment is due to the high demand and congestion at Tribhuvan International Airport. Travelers must plan for a 4–5-hour drive from Kathmandu to Ramechhap, typically undertaken the day before the flight.

Buffer Days for Delays and Cancellations:

Ø  Weather in the Everest region is unpredictable, and flight delays or cancellations are common, especially in Lukla. It is highly recommended to include at least one or two extra buffer day in your itinerary to account for these potential disruptions. This precaution ensures a smoother and stress-free trekking experience.

Day 01Arrival in Kathmandu (1,345m/4,429ft) - Welcome to Nepal!

Welcome to the Himalayan kingdom of Nepal! Upon your arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, our friendly team from Everest Sherpa Expedition will warmly greet you and transfer you to your designated hotel. After checking into the comfortable and charming Hotel Manaslu-a deluxe heritage property-you’ll have time to rest and recover from your journey.

In the evening, we’ll gather for a special welcome dinner featuring authentic Nepali cuisine. For late-night arrivals, the trip briefing will be held the next morning during breakfast.

Depending on the season and air traffic, this short but spectacular flight departs either from Kathmandu or from Manthali (a 4–5-hour drive from the capital). As you soar over the Himalayas, marvel at aerial views of verdant hills, deep valleys, and snow-capped peaks.

Landing at Lukla introduces you to the vibrant energy of the Khumbu region. After meeting the rest of your Sherpa support team and porters, the trek begins. Today’s walk is a relatively gentle introduction to Himalayan trekking, descending slightly to the village of Phakding along the Dudh Koshi River. En route, you'll cross several small suspension bridges, pass chortens and mani walls, and encounter cheerful locals. Phakding is a serene riverside settlement with views of sacred Mount Khumbila.

  • Trek Distance: 6.2km / 3.8 miles
  • Flight Duration: 40/20 minutes
  • Trek Duration: 3 hours

As you pass through charming villages like Monjo and Jorsalle, you officially enter Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The trail ascends steeply in the final stretch to Namche Bazaar, offering your first distant glimpses of Mount Everest if the skies are clear. Namche, a vibrant trading town nestled in a natural amphitheater, is the cultural and economic hub of the Sherpa people. It’s also where you’ll begin to feel the effects of altitude.

After returning to Namche, explore the Sherpa Culture Museum and the local market. This is also an excellent day to grab last-minute supplies or simply unwind in a café with Himalayan views. Afterward, the trail continues downhill through Debuche, passing beneath tall pines and across another bridge over the Imja River before a final push to the spiritual village of Pangboche. The trail climbs steadily through alpine terrain today, leaving the tree line behind. After crossing past yak pastures and seasonal stone huts, you’ll ascend toward Shomare and Orsho villages. From here, the path splits-one heading to Pheriche and the other (yours) toward Dingboche.

Dingboche is a scenic high-altitude settlement known for its vast views, stone-walled fields, and sheltered valley environment. Surrounded by dramatic peaks like Island Peak, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam, it offers one of the best panoramic landscapes in the region.

On arrival at Chhukung-a staging point for Island Peak climbers-you’ll check into the lodge and rest. After lunch, meet your climbing guide for a detailed briefing, gear check, and preparation for the summit climb ahead.

  • Trek Distance: 4.7 km / 2.9 miles

A vital day for acclimatization and skill reinforcement. After breakfast, you’ll hike up Chhukung Ri, a non-technical but steep ascent offering spectacular views of Ama Dablam, Makalu, Baruntse, and the Island Peak itself.

This acclimatization hike not only strengthens your body for summit day but also builds confidence at higher altitudes. In the afternoon, return to the lodge for a final climbing gear check and rope practice session led by your certified climbing guide.

  • Hiking Duration: 4-5 hours round trip
  • Elevation Gain: 800m / 2,625ft

Leave the comfort of the lodges behind as you venture into the high alpine wilderness en route to Island Peak Base Camp. The trail follows rocky moraines, glacial streams, and desolate ridges, gradually rising in altitude and immersing you in the dramatic glaciated landscape.

Upon arrival at base camp, your support team will set up tents and prepare meals in our expedition-style camp. The remainder of the day will be spent resting and reviewing rope techniques and summit logistics with your guide.

  • Trek Distance: 5km / 3.1 miles
  • Trek Duration: 4 hours
  • Accommodation: Tented Camp
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 10Summit Island Peak (6,189m / 20,305ft) & Return to Base Camp

Reaching the top of Island Peak is an unforgettable moment. From the summit, gaze upon a sweeping Himalayan panorama: Lhotse, Makalu, Baruntse, and more. After celebrating briefly, descend carefully to base camp where a warm meal and rest await.

  • Trek Duration: 10-11 hours
  • Accommodation: Tented Camp
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

  • Accommodation: Tented Camp
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 12Island Peak Base Camp to Dingboche (4,360m)

The Trekking Day

The afternoon walk follows a similar pattern to the morning; it is often shorter, and your lodge is usually reached between 4 pm and 5 pm. There is plenty of time to relax or explore the surrounding area until the evening meal is served at about 6.30 pm. After dinner, there is time to chat, read or enjoy a game of cards with our crew. Most members are asleep by 9 pm.

We provide a highly experienced team of IFMGA/UIAGM guides, assistant guides if required, cook and kitchen staff, rope fixing team, and high-altitude workers. Our team is committed to ensuring your safety and satisfaction during your adventure.

Island Peak is classified as a moderately technical trekking peak, requiring basic mountaineering skills. While the approach involves regular trekking on established trails, the final summit section includes snow slopes, a headwall of about 100 meters, and a narrow summit ridge. You should be in excellent physical condition, capable of trekking 6–8 hours a day with a backpack. Prior experience with high-altitude trekking or the use of crampons and ice axes is highly recommended, though a climbing clinic is conducted before the summit attempt.

While prior mountaineering experience is not mandatory, it is highly beneficial. Island Peak is ideal for those who have done high-altitude treks (e.g., Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Circuit) and are looking to take their first step into climbing. Everest Sherpa Expedition provides pre-climb training at base camp, covering essential skills like rope handling, crampon use, fixed rope ascension, and safe descent techniques.

Yes, all necessary permits are arranged and included in the expedition package by Everest Sherpa Expedition. These typically include:

  • Island Peak Climbing Permit (issued by NMA)
  • Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit
  • Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entry Fee
  • TIMS Card (if required)

Our team handles all paperwork, so you can focus on your journey.

The most favorable seasons for Island Peak are:

  • Spring (March to May) – Clear skies, warm weather, and stable snow conditions.
  • Autumn (September to November) – Crisp mountain views, moderate temperatures, and minimal precipitation.

Both seasons offer excellent climbing conditions and stunning Himalayan scenery, with spring providing vibrant wildflowers and autumn bringing crystal-clear views.

  • In Kathmandu: You’ll stay in a quality tourist-standard hotel with breakfast included.
  • During the trek: Comfortable teahouses/lodges with twin-sharing rooms and hearty meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) are provided.
  • At Island Peak Base Camp: You will stay in expedition-style tents, with full support including kitchen, dining, and toilet tents. All meals are hygienically prepared by our experienced expedition cook.

Yes, essential mountaineering gear like climbing harness, helmet, crampons, ascenders, carabiners, and ice axe can be rented in Kathmandu or in Chhukung. Everest Sherpa Expedition also provides group climbing gear, ropes, and tents. We’ll provide you with a detailed gear checklist upon booking. Personal clothing (down jacket, sleeping bag, boots) should ideally be your own, but rentals are available too.

Your safety is our highest priority. Our guides are first-aid and high-altitude rescue trained and will monitor your health daily. In case of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), we follow a "climb high, sleep low" strategy and take all necessary precautions. If symptoms worsen, we initiate a descent or evacuation by horse or helicopter (insurance required). You can still enjoy the trek portion even if you decide not to attempt the summit.
